It was quite a day for Mi-Jack Conquest Racing rookie Charles Zwolsman as he put in his best qualifying performance of his young Champ Car career today by claiming second position in the first round of qualifying. source: conquestracing.com With drying track conditions, Zwolsman took a gamble by putting on dry weather tires on his second while the majority of the field was still on wet weather tires. The decision was a good one though as Zwolsman jumped up into first place. Also on slicks, fellow rookie Dan Clarke put in a lap time 0.476 seconds quicker than the 1:55.599 lap registered by the Dutchman relegating him to second. Zwolsman's teammate at Conquest Racing, Andrew Ranger, opted for the Bridgestone wet weather tires and ended the day in ninth place on the provisional grid. The final round of qualifying gets underway at 3 p.m. eastern tomorrow. 2nd- Charles Zwolsman Qual 1: 1:55.599 (126.063 mph) "It feels okay. I'm a bit bummed out that I didn't get the pole because if it doesn't rain tomorrow, it's going to be worthless and I will have to do it all over again. Right now I'm just praying for rain tomorrow and then it's going to be real good. (About choosing to go to slicks) I saw some dry spots on the track. I thought, let's take a gamble and go out on the slicks, just stay out there, make sure I'm there on the last lap and put a good one in. That's what happened." 9th- Andrew Ranger Qual 1: 1:59.486 (121.962 mph) "It went well today. This morning we only did eight laps in the rain and it was my first time in a Champ Car here, and I found it kind of fun. Ninth on the provisional grid is good because it's always my goal to be in the top-ten. We are not very far away from the top guys like Bourdais, if you don't count Clarke and Charles who were on slicks. So, overall I'm satisfied with my run. Tomorrow will be another day and I'm sure we will improve."
