After a year and a half in Formula One with Toyota,
Cristiano da Matta has set his sights on returning to the Champ Car World Series
next season. The Brazilian and his manager Fernando Paiva visited Hermanos
Rodriquez this weekend, fuelling speculation that da Matta will return to
Newman/Haas Racing next season.
The 2002 CART Champion was dropped by Toyota before the Hungarian Grand Prix,
but remains under contract to Toyota until the end of the year. Newman/Haas are
keen to have their former Champion back, but are also very happy with both
Sebastien Bourdais and Bruno Junqueira. The team are seeking additional funding
to run da Matta in a third car next year.
His Formula One record was not particularly good, but da Matta still believes he
can win given the right equipment.
