Dale Coyne Racing has announced the signing of former Champ Car World Series title winner Cristiano da Matta for the 2006 season. source: crash.net Da Matta, who returned to the series last season after two years away in Formula One, took one victory during 2005 in Portland on his way to eleventh place in the standings but found himself without a drive for the new season after PKV Racing elected to sign Oriol Servia and Katherine Legge for 2006. However, the Brazilian will now line-up for the opening round of the year with Dale Coyne's squad and said he was excited by the prospect of the season ahead. "Dale has consistently produced competitive cars as shown by the results good drivers have experienced in the past," he said. "I am excited about this opportunity and we are both committed to putting out a competitive effort for 2006." Da Matta represents the strongest driver yet to drive for Dale Coyne Racing, following in the footsteps of drivers including Alex Barron and Servia and team boss Dale Coyne said the focus for the new season was on fighting for victory. "Our team has smelled victory in the past, it is now time to taste it," he said. "I am very proud to have Cristiano join our efforts for 2006 and look forward to an exciting season." The team is currently in Fontana for a two-day test, with da Matta taking the wheel of the Coyne Lola for the first time in preparation for the first race next week at Long Beach.
