Win is the first for both Dominguez and the Herdez
Competition team
source: CART.com and Herdez Herdez Competition rookie driver Mario Dominguez today claimed his maiden victory in the CART FedEx Championship Series in the Honda Indy 300 in Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia. Rain was falling during morning warm-up and continued off and on as the cars gridded for the race. A major incident involving nine competitors including Dominguez occurred on lap one, forcing CART to call a red flag. During the stoppage the Herdez Competition crew, led by Team Manager Vince Kremer and New Zealand-native Crew Chief Daryl Fox, made repairs to the nose and front suspension of the #55 car, finishing just in time to join the grid for the re-start. Rain continued to fall, at times heavily, during the race allowing only six laps to be run under green flag conditions. Savvy pit strategy by veteran team member Joe Ward led to four pit stops, the last of which occurred on lap 22. With a mandatory pit stop window of 20 laps and a shortened race distance of 41 laps, this strategy put Dominguez in the lead for the final four laps of the race as other competitors were forced to pit.
