Endurance: Timo Bernhard to wear a Stefan Bellof tribute helmetPorsche works driver Timo Bernhard is to wear a special Stefan Bellof tribute helmet during the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, round 2 of the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship.
Bernhard tweeted a photo of his specially decorated helmet, saying: “Special helmet for Spa in memory of Stefan Bellof, one of the greatest German sportscar drivers”.
Bellof lost his life 30 years ago at Spa-Francorchamps. The young German was racing in Formula 1 for Tyrrell, and was also racing a Porsche 956 for Brun Motorsport. On September 1st 1985, Bellof’s and Jacky Ickx’s Porsches collided before Eau Rouge, sending Bellof’ car straight into the concrete wall. The highly gifted German was pronounced dead of massive internal injuries after he had reached the track hospital. |
