In essence, the 2006 IRL IndyCar Series tile chase starts this weekend in California as everybody tries to stop the newly crowned 2005 championship Dan Wheldon from signing off his championship year in style. source: crash.net After dominating the majority of the current season, Wheldon knows that, with positions behind him in the end of season rankings all up for grabs, Sunday's Toyota Indy 400 will be an exceptionally tough proposition. "I think California is going to be a really good race because obviously the championship has been decided, but second, third and fourth are up for grabs," says Wheldon, who has finished fourth and third in his last two appearances at the two-mile D-shaped oval in Fontana. "Then I think you have the fifth through tenth pretty close. I think everybody's going to be going for broke." In addition to finalising their 2005 positions, Wheldon's competition will be eager to set their stalls out early for next year, something that Wheldon feels will lead to some pretty edgy racing in what could be the IRL's final appearance at the Roger Penske built track. "Fontana's the kind of track that encourages that because it's so wide and so big that it can allow for very, very close racing," added the English born driver, who spent some time living in the California area when he first embarked on a career in the U.S. "It's going to be really, really tight. I think you're going to see a lot of people driving very, very aggressively. "For me, I prefer to finish the season out at Fontana than I would at Texas because Texas allows for everybody to run real, real close. Certainly, you can do that at Fontana, but you've got to have a good racecar also. Fontana rewards a good racecar. I enjoy that kind of superspeedway. I think it's going to be a race that everybody is gunning to win." The complete article here at Crash.net
