Federal Express has said that it will not be continuing its sponsorship
arrangements with CART. This is a major blow to the US series but could be a
bonus for the BMW Williams team which enjoys FedEx support in Formula 1.
FedEx has been the title sponsor of CART since 1998 but has been active in motor
racing since concluding its first F1 sponsorship deal in the middle of 1997 when
the company joined forces with Benetton. FedEx switched to Ferrari in 1999 but
then moved to Williams at the start of the current season after Ferrari signed a
big new deal with Vodafone, leaving FedEx no space on the car.
