In a crazy race where both Tagliani and Ranger were victims of other racers errors and/or stupidity. Sebastien Bourdais managed to avoid many incidents on track to claim victory in San Jose ahead of Christiano da Matta and Justin Wilson who completed the podium. Once again, Paul Tracy was the one to blame for Tagliani abandon when he came back on track after a visit in escape lane and hit Tagliani on the side of Tag's car ending his come back to the top after having started the race in 13th position. What followed in pit lane when Tagliani crossed path with Tracy was ugly and it took the assistance of a Champ Car official and one of Tagliani team personal to put an end to the verbal encounter. For his part, Andrew Ranger was forced out of the race when Catherine Legge, who was five lap behind, forced Ranger into a cement wall. A race to forget for both Québécois.
