One of motorsports' abiding mantras is "what have you done for me lately?" source: champcarworldseries.com - David Phillips That's never more the case than at this time of year, when plans for the 2007 season are rapidly coalescing. From that perspective, although a podium finish at Long Beach counts for the same number of championship points as a top three at Surfers Paradise or Mexico City, there's no substitute for finishing the season on a high note . . . particularly if the rest of the season is one best forgotten. No wonder then, that Mario Dominguez will be aiming for strong finishes Down Under and South of the Border. After all, the '06 season is short on fond memories for the 30 year old Mexican, seeing how some of its most noteworthy features include being sacked by one of Champ Car's top teams followed by a stint with one of Champ Car's perennial underdogs that saw a likely podium finish wiped-out on the last lap at Cleveland. The good news is that Dominguez has finally found a new home, along with one committed sponsor and a potential partner who could be the key to a strong future in '07 and beyond. Dominguez' new "home" is Rocketsports Racing, the Lansing, MI-based team he joined in time for Round 12 of the '06 Champ Car World Series at Road America, with sponsorship support from Mexican petroleum colossus Pemex. Still, jumping into a new car with no testing and little time to get familiarized with the crew -- and vice versa -- is hardly the favored recipe for success. Nor does adding just one "dry"session in two otherwise damp days of practice and qualifying qualify as a "secret ingredient" of Champ Car's Cordon Bleu.
