Kanaan called it payback source: CART.com - Robin Miller FONTANA, Cal.- Tony Kanaan called it payback, Bruno Junqueira termed it disappointing and Cristiano da Matta found it downright humorous. That was qualifying Saturday at California Speedway. The last of 18 qualifiers, Kanaan knocked Junqueira off the pole position for Sunday's The 500 Presented By Toyota to avenge a similar situation last April in Japan. After Kanaan ripped a lap of 232.011 mph (31.483 seconds) in the Pioneer/WorldCom Honda/Lola to take his second pole of 2002, da Matta provided the play-by-play in the press conference. "At Motegi, Tony qualified fastest and jumped out of the car and was celebrating with everyone before Bruno went out and knocked him off," said da Matta, who wound up third in this Brazilian benefit. "Today, Bruno was high-fiving everybody and then Tony got him at the end. "It was good to see both sides." The three buddies were having a good time ribbing each other and all admitted qualifying here really didn't give anybody much satisfaction. "It was a payback and I'm glad we were able to pull it off, but we all know qualifying doesn't mean anything," said Kanaan after earning the fourth pole of his Champ Car career.
