A few weeks ago in a discussion of the major issues facing Champ Car I mentioned in passing that all the ideas going into the 2007 chassis and aerodynamic rules were worth a column of their own, and here it is. The first point is that Champ Car's taciturn but proactive vice-president of operations Tony Cotman has formed a committee of engineers to debate the '07 rules and their plans are already well-developed. The committee includes Bruce Ashmore (of Mi-Jack/Conquest Racing), Brian Lisles (Newman/Haas), Tom Brown (PKV), Scot Elkins, Champ Car's technical director and David Brown (RuSPORT). All these guys have extensive design and development experience in Champ cars and/or Formula 1. "You know what engineers are like," Tom Brown grins. "They'll spend millions and millions if you let them. But if you get the same group of engineers in a room and say--this is where we are, this is the type of racing and type of car we want--they'll produce it, and that's what we're doing right now. It's a good group and we're all pretty much on the same page. We know what we have to do to put on a good show." The general idea is to produce a car that will be similar to the existing Lola B2/00 but a little simpler and smaller, and hopefully capable of producing even more competitive racing. Darwinian Theory and the laws of the economics have given us an attractive, competitive 'spec' car in the current Lola and Champ Car's aim is to refine the existing theme in a very deliberate manner to produce a more cost-effective, more raceable car.
