Grand-Am president Roger Edmondson told the Indianapolis Star newspaper
that his group is considering a last-minute bid for the assets desired by the
Open Wheel Racing Series [OWRS] consortium headed by team owners Gerry Forsythe,
Kevin Kalkhoven and Paul Gentilozzi. Indy Racing League president Tony George is
already know to have tabled a rival bid for the assets, which include vital
contracts with event and circuit promoters.
Should it decide to make an offer, the International Speedway Corporation-owned
Grand-Am would be a serious contender, but Edmondson could not tell reporters
whether or not its bid would make it before Friday's 0930hrs deadline.
Champ Car team owner Gentilozzi admitted to the same newspaper that the ISC -
which also owns NASCAR - and the IRL could be planning a joint swoop for the
assets in order to put Champ Car Racing out of business. In contrast, OWRS has
promised to continue the former CART series in its entirety.
Edmondson, however, insisted that Grand-Am would be bidding by itself, and would
not try to help the IRL.
"I don't have a dog in that fight, and I don't want to be perceived as having
one, either," Edmondson said, "We don't run in those circles."
