Brazilian driver Mario Haberfeld (WalkerRacing) hopes to soon forget Sunday´s Monterrey Grand Prix, which took placeat Fundidora Park in Monterrey, Mexico source: cart.com The Brazilian abandoned the racewith ten laps to the end, after colliding with Mexican Rodolfo Lavin.Haberfeld´s final placing was 15th, out of a starting grid of eighteen cars. The race seemed doomed for Haberfeld from the very beginning. A slightcollision with Frenchman Nelson Philippe cost the driver part of his front wing. The Brazilian then made an early pit-stop, but continued the race despite the damage. The hot temperatures also affected the handling of hisReynard, whose chassis are a lot less heat-friendly than the Lolas used by most other drivers. "The car today was not as fast as it had been earlier in the weekend. Coupling that with the heat and the collisions, it made for a tough day", said a dejected Haberfeld. With ten laps to go, Haberfeld attempted to pass a much slower Lavin, but the turbulence caused by the wing damage on his car caused him to hit the Mexican from behind, ending the Brazilian´s day. After a couple of good practice sessions, Haberfeld had a miserable qualifying, putting him in sixteenth place on the grid. The race proved to be a mere continuation of a troublesome weekend. Despite his misfortunes, however, Haberfeld enjoyed racing in Mexico once again. "The fans in Mexico are fantastic! As a Brazilian, this is second-best to racing in my owncountry, and I look forward to coming back next year." Haberfeld and his team came to Monterrey aware of their limitations, but
feel that the weekend had some positives to draw upon. "To our surprise, the
car was very good the first couple of days. I think we are making progress,
and am looking forward to a solid weekend in Milwaukee in two weeks",
concluded Haberfeld.
