As the end of the IRL's 10th year looms, the plight of the IRL has a very familiar feel
source: paddocktalk.com - Sam Tickell Since their inception in 1996, they have experienced the bad and the good and it could be said that they have reached their peak. With the recent announcement of Toyota's departure at the end of 2006, and Chevy's departure at the end of this year, the IRL could be down to just one engine manufacturer. And the one engine manufacturer left isn't interested in racing against themselves. Let's rewind back to the year 2000. Remember Champ Car in their glory days ? At the 2000 season finale at Fontana, CART had four engine manufacturers (Mercedes Benz, Honda, Toyota and Ford), three chassis manufacturers (Lola, Reynard and Swift), and 26 world class drivers on the track. The great names were there: Andretti, de Ferran, Fittipaldi, Montoya, Brack, Franchitti. The great teams were there: Team Green, Ganassi, Penske, PacWest and more were all present. To the casual race fan, things must have looked pretty good.
