Gates open at 9 a.m. (local time) Wednesday with practice scheduled for noon-6
p.m. General admission tickets are $5, with children ages 5 and younger admitted
free.
Teams and drivers will attempt to earn the final 11 positions in the
Indianapolis 500 field during Third-Day Qualifying on Saturday, May 21. Bump
Day, the final day of qualifications, is set for Sunday, May 22.
As part of the new qualifying format introduced for the 2005 Indianapolis 500,
positions 1-22 were filled during the first weekend of qualifications, and spots
23-33 will be filled on the third day, and bumping within those positions can
take place once the field is full. The slowest car in the field - regardless of
the day it qualified - can be bumped on Bump Day, the fourth and final day of
qualifying.
Tony Kanaan, driver of the No. 11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone for
Andretti Green Racing, scored his first Indianapolis 500 MBNA Pole Award on May
15 with a four-lap average of 227.566 mph.
IndyCar Series rookie Danica Patrick narrowly missed making history by becoming
the first woman to win the MBNA Pole Award at Indy when she qualified faster
than Kanaan on her final three laps, which were 227.638, 227.623 and 227.860,
respectively.
