According to reports, we’ll have to wait at least until 2015 before the Indy Lights Series uses a brand new engine/car package amidst rumours that the series’ future is bleak considering the number of entries confirmed for this year.
The new car initiative was announced last year and interested chassis suppliers and engine manufacturers sent out bids to replace the ancient 2002 Dallara-Infiniti package.
Since then, numerous designs were created and expenses incurred, but according to many of those suppliers, the Lights series failed to meet decision-making deadlines, or to keep them informed as to the reasons behind the delays. The frustration level among some of the entrants and potential suppliers has been increasing over the past few months. Among the reasons that may explained this situation is the recent shuffle in IndyCar management, following the departure of former CEO Randy Bernard, and the current state of the Indy Lights Series that has, one month prior to the season opener 's, only 6 confirmed entries. Although a poor economy has been blamed for the continual decline in the series' car count, it is worth mentioning that other feeder series, among those, the Pro Mazda Series, continue to thrive in the same financial climate.
