Sam Schmidt Motorsports’ Josef Newgarden, was the winner of the Indy Lights race at the Indianapolis Speedway the Firestone Freedom 100.
An incident on a Lap 34 restart involving the No. 4 Belardi Auto Racing Special of Jorge Goncalvez and the No. 9 Liberty Enginerring Racing Special of teammate Anders Krohn prevented the 40-lap race to be completed under green. Goncalvez's car made initial right-side contact with the SAFER Barrier and then darted across the track and made heavy contact with the inside wall. He was alert and transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital for evaluation.
Esteban Guerrieri (Schmidt Motorsports) finished second and Victor Garcia was third in the No. 22 TMR-Xtreme Coil Drilling car. USAC National champion Bryan Clauson finished fifth in his first ever Firestone Indy Lights start. Newgarden, who also won the season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg, took over the championship points lead with 151. Guerrieri has now 125 points while Stefan Wilson, who finished fourth in the No. 5 Andretti Autosport car, has 121. Canadians David Ostella (Jensen Motorsports) finished 8th and Mikael Grenier (O2 Racing technology) 10th.
