Following the tragic death of Dan Wheldon in Las Vegas, IndyCar officials have announced the cancellation of the annual championship prize-giving gala that was supposed to be held following the season’s finale.
IndyCar had originally planned to hold its 2011 Championship Celebration in Las Vegas on Monday night, but this has now been called off. Plans are being put in place for a public memorial for Wheldon, with details due to be released once they have been finalised. Meanwhile, Tony Kanaan and Will Power have both pulled out of this weekend's V8 Supercar round at Surfers Paradise. Tony Kanaan, a close friend of Dan Wheldon told his Twitter followers that he would not be racing in the event that had attracted a number of guest stars. Will Power, who hurt his back in the 15-car pile-up in Las Vegas, has decided that he would be unable to compete this weekend. Dan Wheldon himself was supposed to share a Toll Holden Racing Team Commodore with V8 Supercar champion James Courtney.
