Former Formula 1 and CART series’ champion Jacques Villeneuve is reportedly considering a comeback to open-wheel racing to chase the $5m bonus offered to an "outsider" who can win the season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Autosports reports that the Canadian is supposedely in discussions with IndyCar regarding one of the five "wild card" spots that will be available for the October 16 race. Auto123.com joined Villeneuve by phone in Europe to get the truth on this. “If I am interested in competing in the Las Vegas race? Well, I did not speak to the IndyCar officials. I think Rick (Gorne, his manager) got in touch with the IndyCar people to test the waters,” Villeneuve told Auto123.com “Let’s say it’s not a priority at this moment. There are plenty of other, more important things on the table right now. I am still in negaciations for a ride in NASCAR, and that’s my top priority,” Villeneuve said. “That’s the kind of race that needs to be done right. It represents a huge challenge and you need to do thing the right way. Additionally, it may be pretty dangerous out there as that race will turn into a dash-for-cash. I can see some drivers getting overly motivated to win this thing. But I want to stress that this event is not a priority,” Villeneuve concluded.
