Auto123.com has learned that Canadian veteran driver Paul Tracy could be joining IndyCar newest team Michael Shank Racing for the upcoming 2012 season.
Tracy, who was racing in Daytona last week-end, stated that he was looking forward to do a final season of racing IndyCars and that he is on the verge of signing a contract with the squad owners Michael Shank and AJ Allmendinger. "We have a car," Paul Tracy stated. "We have a sponsor lined up. We need to put together an engine program this week and tie up a couple of other lose ends, and if we can do that, then we’ll get the car put together and try to get to Sebring to test."
Although Shank already announced that his team would be motorized by Lotus, Tracy’s longstanding association with Honda Canada would probably help to get Honda Performance Development-built 2.2-liter single-turbo V6 engines instead Michael Shank Racing was running for one of the two $1.2 million IndyCar TEAM contracts, but it’s believed the contracts went to two other entrants. A third TEAM contract should be awarded this week and if it is given to MSR Indy, it could be the final piece that would secure a full-time program for Shank and Tracy.
