A lot has been said following the presentation of the Kentucky Indy 300 last weekend but one thing that went almost undetected is the fact that Scott Dixon secured the A.J. Foyt Oval Trophy for 2011.
A few weeks ago, it was Will Power’s turn to earn the Mario Andretti Award for having been the most successful driver of the year on street/road circuits. Dixon, a Chip Ganassi driver accumulated the most points via top-five finishes in all seven oval races and outdistanced his teammate Dario Franchitti by 10 points. As the winner of the A.J. Foyt oval award, Dixon will be presented a $50,000 check at the IndyCar Championship Celebration on October 17 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, JR Hildebrand and James Hinchcliffe also have had highlights in their inaugural IZOD IndyCar Series seasons, and the Firestone Indy Lights graduates will take their Sunoco Rookie of the Year duel – six points separation-- to the 1.5-mile Vegas oval. Hinchcliffe, the driver of the No. 06 Scott Newman/Haas Racing car, vaulted past Hildebrand in the standings with a season-best fourth place at Kentucky Speedway on October 2nd.
