After deliberation, the
IndyCar Series has decided to limit its grid size to 26 cars at every event with the exception of the Indianapolis 500 and the Las Vegas finale this year.
Of the 26 places allowed, the first 24 will be set on qualifying pace, with another two 'provisionals' set aside initially for recent champions, then drivers in the top 22 in points before practice and qualifying times are considered.
With slightly larger fields expected for some rounds this season, the series' competition chief Brian Barnhart said the time was right to set a limit.
The Indy 500 will retain its traditional 33-car starting grid, while Las Vegas will be allowed 30 starters to accommodate the five guests from other series competing for the $5 million bonus announced recently.
