Paul Tracy (KV Racing) and veteran Scott Sharp (Panther) were allowed to take part in the first day of the Rookie Orientation program and the former Champ Car champion was the quickest of all drivers at the end of the day.
The Canadian, who has not been at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 2002, outpaced Scott Sharp in the final minutes of Tuesday's refresher and rookie sessions with a speed of 223.089 mph. Robert Doornbos (NHLR), Raphael Matos (Luczo Dragon) and Alex Tagliani (Conquest) also posted laps over 218 mph while completing their rookie tests. Indy's Rookie Orientation Programme requires new drivers to pass through four phases that include ten laps at each of the following speed minimums: 200 mph, 205, 210 and 215-plus. Doornbos, Matos, Tagliani and Mike Conway all completed the ROP without issue but Nelson Philippe and Stanton Barrett, will have to complete the four phases. The ROP will continue on Wednesday morning just before the first practice session opened to everyone. Rookie Orientation times - Day 1: Pos. Name Team Speed 1. Paul Tracy KVRT 223.089mph 2.
