Bruno Junqueira led the way as fifteen of the Champ Car World Series field
took part in an open test session ahead of the first Las Vegas Champ Car 400
next month.
The teams started the test under heavy clouds, with the session finishing under
the lights, vital to the drivers as the race itself will run after sundown. With
the Champ Cars taking to the track after the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, the
meeting will also be the first double header between a NASCAR series and Champ
Car.
Brazilian Junqueira topped the charts with a best lap of 26.538 seconds in a
session that saw ten of the 15 cars reach the 200mph mark.
"I ran flat out all the way around all night, and the car felt really good," he
said afterwards. "This is going to be an incredible race. There is no way that
anyone is going to break away. It's going to be like Daytona or Talladega,
except there won't be 40 cars and we can't bump."
Newman Haas teammate, and series leader, Sebastien Bourdais was second fastest
in 26.586 seconds, with the Frenchman forecasting an exciting race in a months
time.
"There are probably three lines around this track but the bottom is definitely
the fast way around," said he said. "You can come up on other guys and the car
pretty much reacts the same way in traffic as it does on its own. It should make
for an exciting race."
