When the 2005 Champ Car World Series season began few ranked RuSport's Justin Wilson to be a championship contender source: paddocktalk.com - Brad Gerhart However, when everything was all said and done, few thought Wilson shouldn't be ranked as a serious championship contender. During the year, Wilson rose to superstardom and elevated himself into the Champ Car elite to finish third in the final driver points standings. Wilson entered the 2005 season with one Champ Car season under his belt. He'd moved the more experienced Mi-Jack Conquest organization to a newer and younger RuSport enterprise. When the green flag dropped at Long Beach, RuSport appeared poised and full of determination with Wilson behind the wheel. They backed that appearance up with three straight fourth place finishes to start the season (Long Beach, Monterrey and Milwaukee). And just like that.... Wilson had the critics second-guessing and thinking maybe his time was now. If strong finishes wasn't enough, Wilson's first career Champ Car pole in Portland definitely raised the awareness of Justin. Unfortunately, the weekend was beset with disappointment as he ended the day in 17th. "I'm really disappointed and in a bit of a state of disbelief, really," said Wilson. "The car was fantastic and everything was going to plan; I was really almost in a cruise mod. The car was so good in fact that the walk back to pits was harder on me than driving the car." On the streets of Toronto, Wilson grabbed a second row start squarely behind Toronto native Paul Tracy. The lanky Brit stayed patient throughout the race and waited for his opportunity.
