Darren Manning believes that the level playing field of the IndyCar Series could enable him to win races next year. source: autosport.com - Glenn Freeman The 31-year-old confirmed his return to the series with AJ Foyt's team earlier this week, and he feels that things are a lot more open than when he last raced in the championship 2005. "Things are more equal with the engine situation now, and I think a team like us will have a chance on the short ovals and road courses," Manning told autosport.com. "On those tracks the driver and engineer can make more of a difference than on the superspeedways, so I think we'll be able to run at the sharp end and maybe sneak a victory or two. "I want to be winning races, and AJ has a lot of passion to get the car back to where it should be." However, Manning is also aware that the team have to make progress after a barren spell in the series. "The biggest thing for next year is to move forward," he said. "We want to be regularly in the top 10, and then hopefully start getting top fives and podium finishes." When Manning was dropped by Chip Ganassi mid-season in 2005, he claimed that he didn't want to return to the series, and said he was chasing a drive in Champ Car. "Time heals mental wounds," he said. "I was disillusioned with the Ganassi-Toyota programme and the way it ended, but the way the championship is now gives me more hope."
