Leading global food service retailer McDonald's® and four-time championship
winning team Newman/Haas Racing announced today that McDonald's would become
primary sponsor of the car to be driven by Sebastien Bourdais in the 2004 Champ
Car World Series. In 2003, McDonald's appeared three times as co-primary sponsor
of the No. 2 Ford-Cosworth/Bridgestone race car of then-rookie Bourdais.
"I'm delighted that McDonald's has extended the family relationship to include
not only Newman's Own salad dressings but to also embrace our Newman/Haas Racing
family that competes in the Champ Car World Series," said Paul Newman, who with
racing entrepreneur Carl A. Haas, co-own Newman/Haas Racing, the winningest
active team in the Champ Car World Series which will hold events in five
different countries this season.
In their debut with the team in Cleveland in 2003 Bourdais put McDonald's in
Winner's Circle when he earned his much-anticipated first victory on American
soil after victories in England and Germany earlier in the season. He finished
second to teammate Bruno Junqueira in Denver and was forced out of the Miami
race after being hit by another driver while in second place. After a total of
three wins and five poles, Bourdais ended the season ranked fourth overall and
earned Rookie of the Year, the Bridgestone Grip on the Season award and became
the first rookie to win the Greg Moore Legacy Award.
In March of 2003, Paul Newman, President and Founder of Newman's Own, Inc.,
philanthropist and actor, and McDonald's announced an exclusive alliance to
feature Newman's Own all-natural salad dressings served with McDonald's new
Premium Salads in restaurants nationwide. The McDonald's Newman/Haas sponsorship
is an extension of McDonald's relationship with Paul Newman and Newman's Own,
and the launch of McDonald's new Premium Salads with Newman's Own dressing that
began April 2003 nationwide. The Newman/Haas race car will feature graphics of
McDonald's Golden Arches and the Premium Salads logo.
