Following is a current round-up of the latest Champ Car news, trends to
follow, names to watch and a few statistics to track as Champ Car racing heads
to the 2.786-mile permanent road course of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez
circuit in Mexico City, Mexico.
Down to the wire - The 2004 Champ Car World Series Championship Title has yet to
be determined and will be awarded during the season finale in Mexico City.
Newman/Haas Racing is set to have a 1-2 finish in the Championship standings,
with either Sebastien Bourdais or Bruno Junqueira holding the Vanderbilt Cup at
the end of the weekend. Bourdais leads his teammate by 22 points. This is the
first time in four seasons that the battle for the title will go to the year's
last race.
Racing for Beer - Corona, which is the primary sponsor of the #3 Corona Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
Champ Car driven by Rodolfo Lavin, created the Corona Cup for the 2004 Champ Car
World Series season, awarding a cash prize of $100,000 and a special trophy to
the driver that scores the most total points in the two Champ Car races held in
Mexico. Bourdais leads in the Corona Cup points after his win in Monterrey,
while Junqueira is seven points behind.
Pressure on the Four Amigos - Michel Jourdain Jr., Mario Dominguez, Rodolfo
Lavin, and Roberto Gonzalez are heroes in the eyes of their countrymen. However,
the Mexican countrymen would like to see one of these for drivers on top of the
podium. Mexico has yet to see one of their own win a race on home soil.
