It's the end of an era for CART source: CART.com - John Oreovicz MEXICO CITY--This weekend's Gran Premio Telmex/Gigante Presented by Banamex/Visa in Mexico City not only represents the end of the 2002 FedEx Championship Series season, it's the end of an era for CART. Sunday will mark the end of the manufacturer era with CART using a spec engine next year. In addition, it will likely be the final time that some drivers compete in the most diverse form of racing in the world. While some might believe the impending departure constitutes a problem for CART, others see it as a time of opportunity. No matter what form of sport, talent comes and goes. And it's always replaced by a younger generation of even more highly skilled stars. Besides, the thunderous reception that the CART FedEx Championship Series is bound to receive at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez might give those departing the series some serious second thoughts. More than a quarter of a million fans are expected to attend over the course of the three-day weekend, spurred on by the prospect of a home victory by favorite sons Adrian Fernandez, Michel Jourdain Jr. or Mario Dominguez. In short, CART's return to Mexico City after a two-decade absence is going to be huge. And it should help put to rest any lingering doubts about the drawing power of CART's unique form of racing.
