The Champ Car action got underway today at the 2.795-mile street course in Surfers Paradise, Australia with the presentation of the first round of qualifying. source: Mi-Jack Conquest Racing It was a challenging day for the Mi-Jack Conquest Racing Team as they took the 11th and 13th spots on the provisional grid. Andrew Ranger, who qualified 17th here last season, was reminded how technical the track at Surfers can be by struggling with the set-up on his car, and placed himself 11th with a time of 1:34.155 on his seventh of eleven laps. His teammate Charles Zwolsman, who took to the Australian track for the first time in his young Champ Car career, had the added difficulty of learning a new track. For his first qualifying attempt on the unfamiliar track he registered a time of 1:35.017 on his eleventh and final lap of the session which was cut short by a red flag. The second round of qualifying gets underway Saturday at 12:20 a.m. eastern time. 11- Andrew Ranger #27 Wal-Mart / Tide Qual 1: 1:34.155 (106.866 mph) "The track has a lot of turns and bumps and it takes a good balance on the car, but right now we are having problems finding that balance. We did improve a bit from the morning session but not enough, so we have a lot of work to do tonight with the engineers in order to be faster tomorrow but at least we know we are going in the right direction." 13- Charles Zwolsman #34 Mi-Jack Conquest Racing Qual 1: 1:35.017 (105.897 mph) "First of all, I think it is a nice track. A bit bumpy in some places but with some nice sections. The fast chicanes in the back are especially fun to drive. This morning we had a flat spotted tire so we didn't have a good outing and I have to get used to the track because it is my first time here. However, in qualifying we were improving every time we went out and it's a shame the red flag cut our last run short as it was my best lap. So I am looking forward to tomorrow because there is still a lot to come."
