In the notebook Saturday
source: cart.com This is shaping up as a big stretch for Patrick Carpentier. After pacing the CART FedEx Championship Series field for the past two days, Carpentier has moved into a tie for third place in the Vanderbilt Cup standings with Bruno Junqueira and Michel Jourdain Jr. On Sunday, he'll have a strong chance to score his third career CART race win, sweeping this year's two Ohio Champ Car races in the process. On Tuesday, the genial French-Canadian will celebrate his 31st birthday, and before the month is out, he'll have the opportunity to race a Champ Car in Montreal for the first time in front of his hometown fans and sponsor, Player's. Sometime during that stretch, Patrick expects to announce his future plans. "It's always a bit of a distraction when you're dealing with the unknown," he said after claiming his first pole since Milwaukee '98. "I just have to drive the car and do the best job I can. I'm just trying to focus on getting as many points as possible and moving up in the championship. We'll see what happens later." Asked what he would do if he wins Sunday's 92-lap CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, Carpentier said, "If I win another race, I'm going to run around the track naked or something!"
