source: motorsport.com Motorsport.com has learned through reliable sources in Mexico that a new team for the 2003 CART Champ Car World Series has been formed by Modelo Group. The Corona Racing Team has signed Mexican driver Rodolfo Lavin. Modelo Group formed a partnership with Walker Racing for the technical management of the new team. Lavin and Corona have been together competing in two of the CART ladder series: Atlantic and the now-defunct Indy Lights. The 25-year-old Lavin resides in his hometown, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. At the age of four, Lavin started in karting. His racing career took him to the Indy Lights series in 1996 and to the Atlantic series in 2001. He finished third in rookie of the year points and netted seventh in the standings in his first season with Michael Shank Racing. In 2002, Lavin finished ninth in the overall Atlantic standings, his best finish being a second at Milwaukee in June. The Milwaukee event was the race that brought the fans to their feet watching the three-way battle for second. Racing head-to-head on the legendary oval in very close racing quarters, Lavin made a pass going into turn three and held the spot for the final laps. After the race, Lavin stated, "It definitely was a very tough, tough race." "It suddenly comes to me how important this deal is," said Lavin. "I can only thank Modelo Group for having created this new team after so many years sponsoring me. I understand it is a very big commitment and I'll approach it professionally". Walker Racing is owned and operated by Scotsman Derek Walker, who founded the team in 1990.
