GP2 pilots Nelson Piquet Jr and Ernesto Viso headed the voting in the annual poll to find the American continent's outstanding young talent, beating off rivals from Formula One, Champ Cars and rallying. source: crash.net With the emphasis on future talents this year, journalists from 19 countries from Canada to Peru picked Piquet ahead of nine rivals, with Viso slotting in to second place in another significant result for the GP2 Series. Piquet accumulated 75 points, five ahead of Viso, as the two South Americans finished ahead of the likes of Helio Castroneves, Felipe Massa, Mario Dominguez, Patrick Carpentier and GP2 rival Jose María Lopez. Previous winners of the award, include Juan Pablo Montoya, Rubens Barrichello and rally star Ramón Ferreros. While Piquet has attracted his fair share of attention throughout the season, Viso's second place is perhaps more unexpected after he struggled to replicate his testing pace in the championship itself. He and the BCN team suffered a string of mechanically-induced retirements, before finally getting their season into gear in the closing stages, culminating in a handful of podium finishes at the final rounds. Piquet has twice topped winter testing at the wheel of his Piquet Sports Dallara, and is expected to contest the 2006 series with the squad, despite rumours that he is to move to ART and sell Piquet's entry to Carlin Motorsport. Viso, meanwhile, has tested with both Coloni and iSport in recent weeks, and is expected to decide which team he will race for over the holiday period.
