Whilst F3 Euroseries champion Lewis Hamilton appears to be a shoo-in for the number one seat at GP2 teams' champion ART Grand Prix, the identity of his team-mate could remain in question for some time yet. source: crash.net With the McLaren F1 team suggesting that it would support Hamilton's candidacy for the seat vacated by new Williams graduate Nico Rosberg, and both the Hamilton and team boss Frederic Vasseur apparently both admitting, whilst on stage at the recent FFSA awards - that a deal had been struck, the Briton's place on the grid seems secure, but at least two drivers remain in contention to partner him in the pre-season favourite squad. Vasseur has admitted that he is close to re-signing Alex Premat, who has shone in the A1 Grand Prix series since the end of the GP2 campaign in which he finished a close fourth in points, but it would appear that Timo Glock has not faded from the picture entirely. Given the location in which it was uttered, Vasseur's statement on Premat could have been made to merely keep the French happy, as the possibility of signing Glock, the current Champ Car rookie of the year, must be tempting - especially seeing how the German performed on his first acquaintance with a GP2 car at Paul Ricard earlier this month. While Premat and Glock appear poised to fight it out for the right to partner Hamilton in 2006, other candidates will hope that they have not been excluded from the frame, with rumours still continuing to insist that Nelson Piquet Jr could end up at ART, despite his Piquet Sports team claiming that it had no intention of selling its entry to Carlin Motorsport or anyone else. Jose Maria Lopez, Franck Perera and Hayanari Shimoda are among those to have run with ART in winter testing, but all are now expected to land seats elsewhere for next season.
