Formula One Sale: Not So Fast
Just days after stating that a sale of Formula One was more likely than not this year, F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone is throwing cold water on his own declaration. The 84-year-old racing top gun repeated on Thursday that three parties do indeed have significant interest in purchasing the racing circuit, but that neither he nor 35.5-per-cent shareholders CVC are currently interested in selling their parts. Fernando Alonso is maintaining that he intends to see out his current contract with McLaren, and adds that there is no disharmony with Honda despite the controversial remarks he made during the Japanese race that led to the retirement talk. Red Bull’s relationship with engine supplier Renault has gone sour this year, and no other supplier has yet been lined up for 2016. The prospect is not appealing for F1, which would see its grid of cars shrink to 18 cars next season, even with the arrival of the U.S.-based Haas team. Greg Biffle, a non-chase competitor, came in next, followed by Joey Logano and Kasey Kahne. Veteran driver Jeff Gordon, gearing up for the last race of his career, posted the sixth fastest lap time on the day. Passes Law to Confiscate Cars of Spectators at Street Races In the latest battle in the war against illegal street racing being waged by the city of Los Angeles, city council there is considering a statute giving police the right to confiscate vehicles of those who attend these races. Currently, drivers who participate in the dangerous activity of illegal racing on city streets may lose their cars, which are then sold at auction. Now some councilmembers are aiming to go further and impose the same penalties on those who merely are present at races.
