Both Alex Barron and Patrick Carpentier improved during the morning practice sessions, but failed to run their best laps during the afternoon qualifying session on the hot one-and-a-half-mile course. Barron started off the day in the first practice session, posting a top lap speed of 209.136 mph before improving to 211.136 mph in the second session. He then went on to run a top lap of 210.113 mph in qualifying, which places him on the outside of row nine for the race. "We ran a little quicker than we thought we would. We had the car right on the edge for qualifying. We made a few tweaks from practice. With it getting hotter like this I am surprised the times are as fast as they are. We are happy with that. At this point we really have to focus on our race car. That is our real strong point. Getting it out of the pits and having a good race car. The high groove is going to be really big here tomorrow," Barron said. Carpentier also saw his best speeds in the second practice. In the early session, he turned a top lap of 209.702 mph, and then ran a lap of 211.998 mph in the late session. However, he wasn't able to find the same speeds during qualifying. During the best of two-lap session, he ran a lap of 209.109 mph, putting him on the outside of row 10 for the race.
