With the Rocky Mountains looming in the background, the Red Bull Cheever Racing team took to the track today at Pikes Peak International Raceway in preparation for the Honda Indy 225 on Sunday, Aug. 21. source: redbullcheeverracing.com Alex Barron: #51 Red Bull/Dallara/Toyota/Firestone Patrick Carpentier: #83 Red Bull/Dallara/Toyota/Firestone Today's action included two practice sessions and qualifying. The team put in a total of 144 laps on the one-mile track during the two practice sessions, which saw both drivers improve as the day went along. Patrick Carpentier put up a best lap of 171.817 mph during practice, and his qualifying run almost matched his earlier effort. He turned in a lap of 171.706 mph, which places him in 17th position for the start of the race. "This is a beautiful track, and it's one of the smoothest tracks I've been to. I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow. We worked a lot today on race setups, and I think we're just about where we need to be. We were flat all around, and the car is as neutral as it can be, so there's not a lot more that we can get out of it. We might not be starting up at the front, but I think we have a great racecar, so we should be able to move up during the race. I think it's going to be fun," Carpentier said. Alex Barron was just a tad slower than his teammate during practice and qualifying. Early in the day, he turned in a top lap of 169.15 mph. In his qualifying attempt, be topped his earlier effort, and ran a lap of 169.204 mph. This puts him 20th on the grid. "We were struggling with our handling early in the day, but we seem to have gotten that figured out. The Red Bull Toyota had a good balance we just didn't have the speed. The car was flat all the way around, but for some reason we're lacking top-end speed. I'm not sure what it is, but we're going to have to look at everything pretty closely on the computers to figure it out for tomorrow." Barron said. The team will return to the track tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. ET for the final practice session before the race. Then, the green flag will drop for the Honda Indy 225 at 3:30 p.m. ET, which will air live on ABC.
