Buddy Rice's wife, Michelle, is very understanding source: indycar.com How else would one explain postponing their honeymoon so the 2004 Indianapolis 500 champion can compete in the 38th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race that begins Nov. 18? Rice, who was married Nov. 5, will team with veteran off-road racer and ESPN2 broadcaster Cameron Steele in the highly competitive Trophy Truck division. The Rice-Steele entry will be one of 33 Trophy Trucks in the 709-mile contest. More than 330 machines are entered in the desert race that will be broadcast on NBC on Dec. 10. The Rahal Letterman Racing driver is excited about his off-road debut. "I have been looking forward to racing in the Baja 100 for many years," said Rice, who competed in the International Race of Champion series this year in addition to the 17-race IndyCar Series. "We almost had a deal put together last year but there were many things that came up after winning Indy (500). "This year, Cameron asked me again if I would be interested in racing with him. And I jumped at the opportunity. I have been testing with his truck recently and we are pre-running before the race. So I am anxious to get the chance to race in one of the greatest races in the world. It should be an excellent experience. The Baja is a legendary race like the Indianapolis 500 but a totally different environment." Making his off-road debut in the sport's most competitive and high-speed division, Trophy Truck, is a big jump for Rice.
