Vision Racing has announced it will turn to veteran
driver Roberto Moreno for assistance when it participates in this week's IndyCar
Series road course test at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Moreno will not
actually race for Vision but has agreed to assist with testing and being a
driver coach for primary driver, Ed Carpenter.
In the midst of its inaugural season, Vision Racing's IndyCar Series and Menards
Infiniti Pro Series drivers possessed almost no experience on road or street
courses going into last weekend's race at St. Petersburg, Fla. The lack of
experience showed as Ed Carpenter started 19th and finished 19th, completing
only 32 laps before being forced out of the IndyCar race. In the Pro Series
Drake started 10th and finished 10th in the 13 car field.
When the team returned to their Indianapolis base, team manager Larry Curry said
he first looked internally for someone with experience who could help Carpenter
in the IndyCar Series. When he saw there was no one on the team with the needed
experience, Curry turned to Moreno.
There is no commitment from the team to Moreno to race, but the 46- year-old
native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil agreed to attend the Sonoma test where he will
drive the car at the start of the test. Moreno will provide Curry feedback about
the car and then he will coach Carpenter during the remainder of the test.
Moreno has competed in the IRL and Champ Car.
