The Atlantic car, powered by the 2.3-liter, 300-horsepower Mazda-Cosworth engine while riding on Cooper Tires next season in the 2007 Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda, has been nominated in the Chassis Development of the Year category at the Professional Motorsport World Expo Awards. The expo takes place November 8-10 in Koln, Germany and the awards ceremony will be held this evening. The Swift chassis is competing against some of the other top race cars in the world in its award category, including entries from the Renault Formula One team, the Ford Focus World Rally car and the Super Aguri F1 squad. "Swift is honored to be considered as nominees at the Professional Motorsport World Expo Awards, especially in a category with such esteemed company," said Chris Norris, Chief Design Engineer for Swift Engineering. In addition to the chassis design nomination, Norris is also a finalist for the Design Engineer of the Year Award at tonight's ceremony. Builders of Atlantic chassis since 1987, Swift Engineering took on a massive project last year. Charged with the task of creating a bigger, more powerful Atlantic car that would better prepare the future stars of open-wheel racing for their transition to the 750-horsepower rockets of the Champ Car World Series, the company designed and manufactured 40 of the new Atlantics and delivered them to series teams all in a span of only 226 days. The result was an affordable, yet durable and race-ready machine that helped produce one of the most competitive and exciting seasons in the 33-year history of the series in 2006. The new Atlantic cars continue to see action in testing this offseason and the machines will be put to the test again in 2007 with a host of new series competitors in the Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda. The Champ Car Atlantic Championship continues to be the premier open-wheel development series in North America. Preparing for its 34th season in 2007, the championship is noted for its long history of graduating its stars into Champ Car competition and has helped produce past Champ Car champions Paul Tracy, Jimmy Vasser, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, Michael Andretti and Jacques Villeneuve. 2006 Champ Car competitors Alex Tagliani, Andrew Ranger, Katherine Legge, Tonis Kasemets, David Martinez and 2005 Atlantic champion Charles Zwolsman are established Atlantic graduates along with 2004 Champ Car Rookie of the Year and 2003 Atlantic champ A.J. Allmendinger and 2000 series champion Buddy Rice. Competing in Swift 016.a chassis powered by a 2.3-liter Mazda-Cosworth engine while riding on Cooper Tires, 2007 competitors will fight for the 12-race championship and the unique $2 million Champ Car series champion's bonus.
