Target Chip Ganassi Racing drivers Scott Dixon, Darren Manning and Ryan Briscoe
helped kick off the Indianapolis 500 Festival Community Day in the downtown core
on Wednesday morning, looking skyward as a team of three stuntmen repelled down
the Indiana Square Building to show off Dixon's 2003 IndyCar Championship
racecar affixed to the side of the building's 21st floor.
While morning newsmakers coyly teased the event as a Target IndyCar being
"suspended" for the Indianapolis 500, inferring that it might not be permitted
to race on Sunday, it actually referenced the fact that the Target Toyota was
literally suspended and anchored to promote this weekend's infamous contest.
Two electric winches hoisted the 1000 lb IndyCar (without engine and gearbox)
from the ground to the 21st floor Tuesday night under ideal low-wind conditions,
and the car will remain on display until Sunday's 89th running of the
Indianapolis 500 in its position affixed to the center column of the building.
The high-altitude heroics performed by stuntmen from action marketing agency
Jochen Schweizer included three "vertical catwalks" throughout the day,
attracting the attention of downtown Indy passerbys in addition to national and
local media.
A total of six stuntmen spent more than 300 hours on training for the high-wire
act, practicing with a racecar replica mounted on to the front of their training
building. The results were spectacular. With the stuntmen displaying their
Target bull's-eyed fire suits throughout the day, spectators watched eagerly as
the group acted out death-defying feats of airborne supremacy which gained
exposure for the month of May Classic at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The stunt demonstrations with the Target IndyCar will continue to take place
throughout the rest of the week and during the 500 Festival Parade which takes
place in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday, May 28 at 12 noon.
