Also... the secret to attending more races, it'll surprise you!
Champcar is definitely my favourite open wheel racing series, but I'm going to
have a look at the IRL this year too.
To be honest I've never sat down and actually watched an entire IRL race. I
watched it with mild curiosity back in 1996 - never more than 10 minutes at a
time. This year I'm giving it an honest shot - not only on TV, but I'm actually
going to a race or two. Most of the teams and the drivers have moved from CART/Champcar
to the IRL, so I want to see what all the fuss is about.
From what I've read on various forums lately, there doesn't seem to be any fans
that like both Champ Car and the IRL (or if there are any out there, they are
few and far between - "closet" dual-followers too afraid to admit it for fear of
getting harassed). It appears that you have to be for one and hate the other -
no middle ground here. It's a definite "hate" as opposed to a "dislike". There
doesn't seem to be much tolerance for the other series, but for some reason
there is no problem with someone liking either one, but also following another
race series such as F1 or even NASCAR.
In the interests of race fans everywhere, I'm going to take one for both teams
this year - I'm going to attend a few IRL and Champ Car races, and intend to
watch the remaining ones on TV to the best of my ability. At the end of the
season I'll make an honest evaluation and I'll share it with you if you're
interested - so stay tuned.
So where am I going to find the time to see all these additional races?
F1 races are going to be watched only if I have time. I've stuck by it long
enough, and I'm fed up with watching parades for two hours every two weeks. Sure
there's lots of exciting stuff going on this year in F1. There are new teams
and driver changes, but will it turn out to be just the same old same old? We'll
have to wait and see, but I'm not holding my breath.
And now, what you've all been waiting for ...
