Although the 2003 Champ Car World Series may have
ended prematurely on the streets of Surfers Paradise, thanks to the cancellation
of the King Taco 500 the following weekend, that didn't mean the racing season
was over for a number of Champ Car drivers past, present and, in all likelihood,
future
source: cart.com The annual season-ending 500km kart race in Sao Paulo, Brazil attracted a Who's Who of international racing stars including Ferrari Formula 1 drivers Rubens Barrichello and former Champ Car Champion Juan Pablo Montoya as well as solid representation from the Champ Car scene with MiJack-Conquest Racing's Mario Haberfeld and former Walker/Newman-Haas Racing ace Christian Fittipaldi on hand. Perhaps the most intriguing entry came from a four-driver team captained by irrepressible two-time CART champion Alex Zanardi along with former teammate Jimmy Vasser, Michel Jourdain, Jr. and Oriol Servia. In fact, Fittipaldi's team went on to win the race while Barrichello's team rebounded from a dreadful start which claw their way back to sixth place after suffering (and replacing) a blown engine in the early going. Worth noting is that Barrichello's young teammate, one Marco Andretti (son/grandson of Champ Car greats Michael and Mario), played a key role in the recovery drive. As for the Champ Car all-stars, Zanardi, Vasser, Jourdain and Servia came home a fine fourth place overall. Not bad considering they were in sixth place with a couple of hours to go, or that they went into the race with relatively low expectations.
