In seven days, Paul Tracy and
Player's/Forsythe Racing lost what it took three months to build: a healthy
points lead in the Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car World Series Powered by
Ford
source: cart.com On the strength of wins at St. Petersburg, Monterrey and Long Beach, PT and Player's/Forsythe headed to Brands Hatch and EuroSpeedway Lausitz with a 26 point cushion over Bruno Junqueira in the race for the Champ Car World Series title. One dnf and an uncompetitive twelfth place finish later, and Tracy finds himself in a mathematical tie for the points lead with Junqueira. It is small solace that, were the Vanderbilt Cup awarded today, it would go to Tracy on the basis of the most race wins (three to none). To make matters worse, Tracy & Co. know the injuries were largely self-inflicted. A broken gearbox at Brands Hatch cost him a sure podium finish in the London Champ Car Trophy race, while a decision to take a high downforce package with them to the two European events effectively condemned the #3 Player's Ford-Lola to backmarker status in the German 500. "We had a good event in England, could've done well but had a gearbox problem which was disappointing," Tracy reflects. "But then we totally missed it in Germany. We were completely screwed up. We didn't do a very good job of picking our aerodynamic configuration. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot.
