Champ Car's youngest and brightest star, Nelson Philippe will make his Champ Car World Series debut at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach source: cart.com At 17 years old, the dashing Frenchman will also make history as the youngest driver to enter the Champ Car competition. Nelson currently lives in Key Biscayne, Florida, where he has spent most of his teenage years. The cosmopolitan teenager began his racing career at 12 years old, when he was living in Argentina, and worked his way to the seat of the No. 17 Rocketsports/LeasePlan Lola in the premiere open-wheel series. Following several years in numerous junior and pre-junior karting championships in South America and Europe, Nelson stormed the North American karting scene. He was crowned "King of the Street" in the 2002 Rock Island, Illinois pro-shifter championship and pole sitter of the SKUSA World Finals 125 CC pro-shifter race. Nelson set the fast lap record and emerged victorious at the SKUSA GP winter tour in Homestead, 2002. Nelson completed his first full season in the Barber Dodge Pro Series in 2003 and finished ninth in the championship standings with 66 points. In addition to four top-five finishes in ten starts, Nelson earned a third place podium at the Vancouver Indy on his birthday, making it a special race indeed!
