One of the chief mechanics grew up across from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, while the other came of age in Sebring, Fla. The team manager is an Aussie, one of the engineers is a Brit and the other is a Texan. The gearbox guru is from New Zealand. The only Canadian on the team is a female mechanic. Both drivers are American yet are separated by many miles and years. This group has been together less than two months and still are scrambling to get everything ready for this week's season opener in St. Petersburg, Fla. But, for all the newness and factions of American Spirit Team Johansson, there is also a ton of experience and familiarity. Jimmy Vasser, the 1996 CART champion, worked with team manager Rob Hill during their heydays at Ganassi Racing. Engineer Ed Nathman has been reunited with Vasser, whom he worked with at Patrick Racing in 2001. Rookie Ryan Hunter-Reay has a champ car rookie engineer in Graham Taylor, but the native of Gloucester, England spent the past few seasons with Arrows in Formula One.
