As the CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony
George is accustomed to seeing entries slowly accumulate for the famous race at
his fabled speedway, the Indianapolis 500. This year things are a little
different however as two of those entries have his name on them.
George started Vision Racing only weeks before the start of the 2005 season.
With three races under their belt, the team has struggled somewhat to catch up
with the teams that have been working and testing throughout the off season.
Driver Ed Carpenter, George's stepson, currently sits tied for 20th in the
points championship as a result.
Carpenter will drive the first of the team's two Dallara/Toyota entries.
Former IndyCar Series winner and Indy 500 veteran Jeff Ward has been brought in
to drive the second car in the Indianapolis 500. Ward, who has been out of the
League since 2002, has a stellar history at Indy finishing in the top ten four
times in six attempts including finishes of 2nd, 3rd and fourth. Ward was also
the 1997 Rookie of the Year driving for Team Cheever.
"I'm extremely excited. I mean, this is where you want to be as a race car
driver, the Indy 500."
Ward understands that he is being brought in more than just as the driver of
one of the cars however, "I'm happy to come here and be here and try to win the
Indy 500 and work with Ed and put the best program we can together."
