Derrick Walker has always been resourceful and, with Robby Gordon and Gil de Ferran, he was plenty successful - winning CART races from 1995-1999. source: CART.com - Robin Miller But, since his longtime sponsor Valvoline left the scene prior to the 2000 season, Walker has been in a survival mode. In other words, making deals to keep the doors open instead of pursing top-line drivers. To his credit, Walker has managed to keep most of his key employees on board through these shaky economic times and now he's got a two-car effort for 2003. He's also got a brash Brit named Darren Manning that just might revitalize Walker Racing. "It's vital for us to have some performance this year," said Walker, whose last victory came with de Ferran in 1999. "We've had a few years in the wilderness and we need to get back up front and have some results. "Darren has got a lot of confidence and it rubs off on everybody. He's embraced our team and communicates very well and our team has really gotten behind him. "We're all quite optimistic about what he may bring to our team this season." The 27-year-old from North Yorkshire brings more than positive vibes. He was the Japanese F3 champion, a front-runner in F3000 and a test driver for British American Tobacco in Formula One.
