Andretti Green Racing teammate Dan Wheldon has the distinction of being the
inaugural winner of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
Wheldon passed Tony Kanaan on Lap 91 and held off his teammate to claim his
second IndyCar Series victory of the season and fifth of his career by 1.4577
seconds. It was a sweep of the top four spots for Andretti Green Racing as Dario
Franchitti was third and Herta fourth. Rahal Letterman Racing's Vitor Meira was
fifth.
Wheldon move to the top of the standings after three of 17 events.
"Any time you have TK breathing down your back like that, I give myself a pat on
the back," said Wheldon, the 2003 Bombardier Rookie of the Year who was
runner-up to Kanaan in the 2004 standings. "I'm proud of everybody."
Kanaan recorded his 18th consecutive top-5 finish and has completed every lap in
the past 19 races.
Team co-owner Michael Andretti earlier in the day celebrated with his son Marco,
who won the Menards Infiniti Pro Series Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in his
series debut. The party willl go late into the night.
"It is unbelievable," the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner said. "I'm so proud
of everyone. I'm so happy to be here and can't wait to come back next year."
