Justin Wilson put in a steely performance to bring his struggling Mi-Jack
Conquest Racing Lola home in seventh place on the treacherous Denver street
course that played host to round nine of the Champ Car World Series.
In a race punctuated by spins and contact between other drivers, the Briton
battled successfully throughout the 90 laps with Brazilian rival Mario Haberfeld
on the track, and with Canadian Patrick Carpentier, who was a competitor
elsewhere on the circuit after opting to run a different fuel strategy.
Wilson arrived at Denver hoping to improve on the seventh place he achieved at
Elkhart Lake, but was unable to find a decent set-up on Friday, and ended up
eleventh in first qualifying. Saturday brought significant improvements to the
car's pace, but other teams had progressed overnight as well, and Justin and the
team still found themselves some way off the pace of front-runner - and eventual
race winner - Sebastien Bourdais. Eighth place in the session became tenth
overall when Marios Dominguez and Haberfeld decided to use their Friday
qualifying times, leaving the former F1 driver with a lot to do on one of the
trickiest street circuits of the season.
As usual, the race got off to an eventful start when Bruno Junqueira got the
jump on polesitter Bourdais and the Frenchman spun when the two touched at turn
one. Wilson threaded himself through the melee, but chaos reigned behind him
with Alex Tagliani, Michel Jourdain Jr, Rodolfo Lavin and the Briton's new
team-mate, Nelson Philippe, all tangling at the first corner.
Wilson then overtook Haberfeld on the opening lap, but lost position to the
Brazilian during the first round of pit-stops on lap 38. However, he showed his
street-fighting ways by putting another move on the Walker Racing driver during
lap 78 to take seventh place.
